Sea freight of Full Container Load (FCL) involves the transportation of cargo using entire containers dedicated to a single shipper’s goods. This method is widely utilized in international trade due to its efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. Here’s a detailed overview of the process involved in sea freight of Full Container Load:

1. Booking and Documentation:

  1. Booking: The shipper (exporter or importer) contacts a shipping line or freight forwarder to book space on a vessel for their cargo. They specify the container size (e.g., 20ft or 40ft), type (e.g., dry van, reefer), and destination port.
  2. Documentation: The shipper provides necessary documentation, including a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading (B/L), export declaration, and any other required certificates or permits. These documents are essential for customs clearance and cargo tracking.

2. Cargo Preparation and Packaging:

  1. Packaging: The shipper is responsible for appropriately packing and securing the cargo inside the container to prevent damage during transit. Goods should be palletized, shrink-wrapped, and labeled according to international shipping standards.

  2. Weight and Measurement: The shipper provides accurate weight and measurement details for each container, adhering to maximum weight limits and dimensional restrictions set by shipping lines and regulations.

3. Container Loading:

  1. Container Delivery: The shipping line or freight forwarder arranges for an empty container to be delivered to the shipper’s premises or designated loading point.
  2. Loading: The shipper loads their cargo into the container, ensuring efficient space utilization and proper weight distribution to maintain container stability during transit.
  3. Sealing: Once loaded, the container is sealed with a unique seal by the shipper or their authorized representative to prevent tampering during transportation.

4. Customs Clearance:

  1. Export Customs Clearance: Before the container is transported to the port of departure, the shipper completes export customs clearance procedures, including documentation submission and cargo inspection if required.
  2. Import Customs Clearance: At the destination port, the consignee (importer) or their customs broker handles import customs clearance, which involves paying duties and taxes, presenting necessary documents, and undergoing customs inspection.

5. Transportation and Shipping:

  1. Container Pickup: The loaded container is transported from the shipper’s premises to the port of departure, either by truck or rail, depending on the distance and logistics arrangements.
  2. Vessel Loading: At the port, the container is loaded onto the vessel scheduled for departure. Shipping lines use advanced scheduling and stowage planning systems to optimize vessel loading and ensure cargo safety.
  3. Transit Time: The container embarks on its sea voyage, traveling to the destination port. Transit times vary depending on the distance, shipping route, weather conditions, and vessel speed.

6. Arrival and Discharge:

  1. Port Operations: Upon arrival at the destination port, the vessel undergoes port clearance procedures, including anchorage, berthing, and cargo discharge scheduling.

  2. Container Unloading: Containers are offloaded from the vessel using cranes and transferred to the port terminal for storage and subsequent onward transportation.

7. Inland Transportation and Delivery:

  1. Customs Clearance: The consignee completes any remaining customs clearance procedures for the imported cargo, including payment of duties and taxes.

  2. Container Pickup: The consignee arranges for the pickup of the container from the port terminal and its transportation to the final destination, either by truck, rail, or barge.

  3. Cargo Delivery: Upon reaching the final destination, the container is unloaded, and the cargo is delivered to the consignee’s premises or designated delivery location.
